Fri-Sun, Feb 14-16th – Winter Weather Event – Update #3

(11:45PM – Thursday, February 13th, 2025) Thursday night update on a TWO PART storm system will impact the state, from Friday afternoon through Sunday midday. PART 1 will bring mixed precipitation to Northern and Central Illinois from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, including accumulating snow. PART 2 will bring some wintry impacts to the state from Saturday morning through Sunday midday, including the potential for accumulating snow.

…PART ONE…

Timing…
•Friday Afternoon – Saturday morning, February 14-15th.

Location…
•Northern & Central Illinois.

Impacts…
•Snow accumulation ranging from a dusting to 1-3″ will be possible across all of Northern and portions of Central Illinois, with locally higher amounts possible near the IL/WI border. Some of this accumulation may be in the form of sleet/pellets.
•Freezing rain/ice accumulation of a glaze will be possible across portions of Northern and Central Illinois.
•Snow/sleet/pellet/ice accumulation may lead to travel issues for some areas.

Discussion…
•As a lead wave moves through the area and warm air advection occurs, an area of precipitation will traverse Northern and portions of Central Illinois. Mixed precipitation will be likely across these areas. Snowfall totals ranging from a dusting to 1-3″ will be possible across Northern and portions of Central Illinois, with locally higher amounts possible near the IL/WI border. Some sleet/pellet accumulation will be possible as well, with <0.10″ of freezing rain/ice accumulation likely.

…PART TWO…

Timing…
•Saturday Morning – Sunday Midday, February 15-16th.

Location…
•Much Of Illinois.

Discussion…
•As the main developing and strengthening storm system tracks through the region over the weekend, precipitation will traverse the state, with some snow and mixed precipitation likely across portions of the state from Saturday morning through Sunday midday. There is significant disagreement among weather guidance at this time. Thus, there is low confidence in any particular outcome at this moment. With that said, there are signs that as the storm system strengthens and passes southeast of the state, an axis of snow will be possible. As of this time, the best chance of that appears to be across the heart of the state, but that will be refined as additional and new data comes in. At least minor snowfall accumulation will be possible across at least portions of the state. Placement and snowfall accumulation amounts will be revised in future updates.
