(6:00PM – Wednesday, January 10th, 2024) A brief recap of the winter storm that affected the state from Monday afternoon, January 8th, through early Wednesday morning, January 10th. This winter storm brought periods of precipitation to the state during this time, producing accumulating snow, rain, and gusty winds.

•Observed snowfall accumulation ranged quite significantly across Northern and Central Illinois. This was due to the influence of a wind off of the abnormally mild waters of Lake Michigan in Northeastern Illinois and a wavering rain/snow line from Northeastern Illinois on down into Central and Southwestern Illinois. The heaviest snowfall totals of 6-12” occurred across much of Northwestern and Western Illinois, with amounts tapering further east and southeast across Northeastern and Central Illinois.
•Periods of heavy snowfall rates up to ~1” per hour occurred at times during the storm across portions of Northern and Western Illinois.
•With marginal temperatures for the duration of the winter storm in areas that received snow, the snow was heavy and wet.
•Isolated power outages and tree damage occurred as well, due to the heavy and wet nature of the snow.
•Gusty winds of 25-45MPH occurred on the backside of the winter storm across portions of the state.
