(11:45AM – Thursday, January 11th, 2024) Thursday midday update on the winter storm that is expected to move through the region, impacting the state of Illinois from tonight through Saturday morning. This winter storm will bring several inches of accumulating heavy-wet snow to portions of the state, as well as rain and gusty winds.
Timing…
•Thursday Night – Saturday Morning, January 11-13th.
Location…
•Northern & Central Illinois.
Impacts…
•Accumulating snow is expected across all of Northern and portions of Central Illinois. Snowfall accumulation will be greatest across Northern Illinois, where a corridor of 4-7″ to 6-9″ of snow is expected, with locally higher amounts possible as well.
•Occurences of thundersnow will be possible.
•Wind gusts of 30-50MPH are possible across the state, especially midday Friday through Saturday morning.
•The combnation of falling/blowing snow and gusty winds may lead to near blizzard conditions at times, Friday afternoon through early Saturday morning.
•Temperatures may be marginal for a large duration of time during this storm for areas affected by snow. Thus, snow may heavy, wet, and of lower ratio.
•The combination of the expected heavy-wet snow and gusty winds may lead to isolated power outages and tree damage.
•There is uncertainty regarding the evolution of the rain/snow line, and thus uncertainty regarding accumulations on the snowfall gradient from the Chicago metro down into Western Illinois.
