(11:30PM – Monday, January 8th, 2024) Monday night update on the winter storm that will continue to impact the state through early Wednesday morning. This winter storm will bring several inches of heavy-wet accumulating snow to portions of the state, as well as gusty winds.
Timing…
•Tonight – Wednesday Morning, January 8-10th.
Location…
•Northern and Central Illinois.
Impacts…
•A winter storm will continue to affect the state through early Wednesday morning. Rain will be favored for most of the duration of the storm across Southern Illinois, while Central Illinois runs the rain/snow line, and much of Northern Illinois sees mostly snow for the duration of the storm.
•Snowfall accumulation of several inches is expected across much of Northern and portions of Central Illinois. The highest snowfall accumulation of 6-9” will be in a corridor across portions of West-Central and Northern Illinois, with locally higher amounts likely.
•With marginal temperatures in place for the duration of the winter storm, this will be a heavy-wet and cement-like snow. The marginal temperatures will also lead to some melting and compacting of the snow while the winter storm is ongoing.
•Some occurrences of thundersnow will be possible.
•Uncertainty continues in regards to the evolution of the rain/snow line and, thus, uncertainty in accumulations along the gradient across Central and Northeastern Illinois.
•Wind gusts of 25-45MPH are expected with this winter storm as well, especially Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.
•The combination of several inches of heavy-wet snow and gusty winds may lead isolated tree damage and power outages.
